Today was a flurry of activity. Today we either packed what was left in our room (but no capacity), took crap to the storage lockers (not much capacity), or tossed stuff out (infinite capacity). So we’ve been throwing stuff out like crazy. Our room no longer looks like squatters are living here. And we’re packed. No room for anything more,
I set up a French phone number for my phone today, and there were a surprising number of hoops to jump through. I read recently that France is itself Catch 22. But I eventually prevailed and now have two numbers on the phone: My original US number and one for France. The French number is needed for banking and other business in France.
Oh, and last In-N-Out burger for a VERY long time.
We have both developed a growing unease and a low level of panic. One source is that we keep thinking we’re forgetting something (but we’re not) and won’t be here to rectify it. The other source is a realization this is actually going to happen, ready or not.
At this point, if there was a graceful way to get out of this, we’d probably fling ourselves on it. But there isn’t (believe me, I’ve tried to find one!). We did hear today from the owner of the apartment we’re staying in for our first month and it doesn’t appear to be a scam. We’ve also heard from our relocation service and the process to find us a permanent residence will begin next week. So that’s heartening. Likely by the end of next week we’ll wonder what we were so worried about. At least that’s what we keep repeating to ourselves, over and over.
Tomorrow morning we check out from our extended stay place in Foothill Ranch (in Orange County), and relocate for our final night in Long Beach and get rid of our rental car. Then on Friday my sister is picking us up and driving us and our luggage to LAX. Seemed like a good plan at the time.
